Hasbro’s new blisters and windows will be made from Bio-PET plastic, which is made from biodegradable plant materials like fruit and vegetable peels. The company said the move allowed it to maintain its goals of reducing manufacturing waste and using virgin plastic .
In an effort to eliminate all plastic from toy packaging, the company will remove clear windows in 2022. Hasbro reversed that decision because consumers and collectors wanted to see the products before buying.
At the end of the year, many of Hasbro’s figure brands will return to plastic packaging, including the Marvel Legends, Star Wars Black Series and Troopers Flash series. This will expand to all new 6-inch toys in 2024.
Factories produced more than 139 million tonnes of single-use plastic waste in 2021, an increase of 6 million tonnes from 2019, according to the Mindelo Foundation’s 2023 Plastics Manufacturers Index. Recycling isn’t happening fast enough either, with businesses using 15 times as much single-use plastic as recycled plastic by 2021.
Along with Hasbro, Mattel highlighted its commitment to sustainability in a statement by ensuring 100 percent of its products and packaging are recyclable or made from bioplastics by 2030. This is another decision made by a major giant after Zuru, MGA and other giants announced. In response, McDonald’s also announced a pilot recycling program that will recycle unwanted plastic toys and turn them into coffee cups and game consoles
