Using UKCA & UKNI Mark

Following Brexit, the UK introduced the compliance mark UKCA (used in England, Scottish, and Wales) and UKNI (unique to Northern Ireland), which are scheduled to come into force on Jan. 1st, 2023.

UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) is a new market access mark, which is required to present on products or packages or related files when importing and selling products in the UK. Using UKCA mark proves that products entering into UK market are in compliance with the regulation in the UK and can be sold in the meantime. It covers most products that need CE mark previously.

However, merely using UKCA mark is not acceptable in the EU market, where the CE mark is always needed when products entering into it.

Although the UK government has confirmed that they will put UKCA mark into effect on Jan. 1st, 2021, the CE mark will continue to be recognized until the end of 2021 as long as its use is based on relevant EU regulation in line with UK regulations. However, from 2022, the UKCA mark will be used as the sole entry mark for products into the UK market. The CE market will be kept recognized for products entering the EU’s 27 markets.

Starting from Jan. 1st, 2023, the UKCA mark must be printed on products directly in most cases and manufacturer should incorporate this date into the product design process.

We have been talking about UKCA mark, then what about UKNI? UKNI is mainly used in conjunction with the CE mark. You may not use the UKNI mark if you are able to self-declare compliance under the relevant EU legislation applicable to the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland), or if you use a certification body in the EU for any mandatory conformity assessment/testing. In the above case, you may still use the CE mark to sell goods in the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland).
