Survivor of the Last Century – Sofubi
Sofubi is actually a Japanese name of Soft Vinyl Toys, made of polyurethane or PVC.
After World War II, Sofubi toys were born in Japan, and were some of the first exports of the post-war era. In the 60s, monsters, or normally called Kaiju in Japanese were a popular topic around the globe. In the 70s, superheroes became popular, and mecha took over toy design in the next decade. Until the 1990s, it was mainly major brands that produced large numbers of sofubi toys outside of Japan.
In the 90s, the hard plastic industry came, and with China’s labor advantage, sofubi was almost abandoned by toy corporations. At the same time, independent designers and sculptor began to make their own sofubi themselves. It blazed a new trail for soft vinyl to avoid being left behind by the toy industry.
